This home, the winner of this year's Solar Decathlon, will become a home for a worthy family. Image: Lisa Smith and Stefano Paltera/U.S. Department of Energy We’re so glad that a worthy family will move into one of the 19 homes in this year’s Solar Decathlon — a U.S.-funded competition held in the nation’s capital. That may seem like a no-brainer reason to be happy. But did you know that these wonderfully innovative solar energy homes usually never become a true home after the competition? But this year is different thanks to the students at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City and the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J. They worked with housing and community development groups to find a worthy family and a vacant lot to claim the solar-powered home, which uses up to 80% less energy than other houses. How practical. We love it: An innovative home has found a “family sweet family.” What do you think of donating decathlon homes to families in need?

Flood Insurance Information for Homeowners and Renters5/16/2012 5:56:21 PM

Since standard homeowners insurance doesn't cover flooding, it's important to have protection from the floods associated with hurricanes, tropical storms, heavy rains and other conditions that impact the U.S.

In 1968, Congress created the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) to help provide a means for property owners to financially protect themselves.

The NFIP offers flood insurance to homeowners, renters, and business owners if their community participates in the NFIP. Participating communities agree to adopt and enforce ordinances that meet or exceed FEMA requirements to reduce the risk of flooding.

Galveston plays a part in new Bible translation5/14/2012 9:46:16 PM

Authors have long taken seaside sabbaticals hoping to jump-start their creativity. Inspiration seems to preferentially strike on a serene seashore.

David Capes, a professor who teaches theology at Houston Baptist University, headed up the editorial committee that created The Voice. The media, from CNN to the Huffington Post to major newspapers, all keyed on what appears the be missing from this Bible, specifically the name Jesus Christ, but Capes is quick to point out that Jesus Christ is not a first and last name, but a bit of transliteration.

The Voice is the product of seven years of work by a diverse evangelical group that paired poets with professors in order to preserve the poetry and narrative, right down to formatting some sections along the lines of a Hollywood script.

It’s not the first time an island has figured in scripture, of course. The last book of the Bible, Revelation, was composed on another island, known as Patmos, which is located in the Aegean Sea.
